Background of the Study
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory conditions are increasingly becoming a major public health concern in Nigeria. These diseases account for a significant proportion of the disease burden in the country, leading to high morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. NCDs are characterized by long-term care requirements, high treatment costs, and the need for continuous management, all of which place a substantial economic burden on healthcare facilities.

In Plateau State, hospitals and healthcare institutions are facing growing pressures due to the increasing prevalence of NCDs. As the population ages and lifestyle-related risk factors such as poor diet, physical inactivity, and tobacco use rise, the demand for healthcare services related to NCDs continues to increase. However, Nigerian hospitals are often ill-equipped to manage the rising number of NCD cases, which exacerbates the financial strain on healthcare systems.

This study will assess the economic burden of non-communicable diseases on healthcare facilities in Plateau State, focusing on the direct and indirect costs associated with the treatment and management of these diseases. It will examine the financial challenges faced by hospitals and explore the long-term sustainability of NCD care within the Nigerian healthcare system.

Statement of the Problem
The rising prevalence of NCDs in Nigeria, particularly in Plateau State, has led to an increased demand for healthcare services. Hospitals in the state are struggling to manage the financial burden of treating these chronic diseases. Despite the growing impact of NCDs, there is limited research on the economic consequences for hospitals in Nigeria. This study aims to assess the economic burden of NCDs on Plateau State hospitals and identify potential solutions to mitigate these costs.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the direct and indirect economic costs of non-communicable diseases on healthcare facilities in Plateau State.

  2. To evaluate the financial challenges faced by hospitals in managing NCD cases.

  3. To recommend strategies for reducing the economic burden of NCDs on healthcare facilities in Plateau State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the direct and indirect economic costs associated with the management of non-communicable diseases in Plateau State hospitals?

  2. What financial challenges do hospitals in Plateau State face in managing NCD cases?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the economic burden of NCDs on healthcare facilities in Plateau State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The management of non-communicable diseases imposes significant economic costs on healthcare facilities in Plateau State.

  2. Hospitals in Plateau State face financial challenges in managing the increasing number of NCD cases due to insufficient resources and infrastructure.

  3. Implementing preventative measures and improving NCD management strategies will reduce the economic burden on healthcare facilities in Plateau State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the economic impact of non-communicable diseases on hospitals in Plateau State. It will explore both direct and indirect costs, as well as the financial challenges faced by healthcare providers. Limitations include the difficulty of quantifying indirect costs and the variability in data availability across hospitals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Chronic diseases that are not transmissible from person to person, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases.

  • Economic Burden: The financial costs associated with the treatment, care, and prevention of diseases, including both direct costs (medical expenses) and indirect costs (lost productivity, disability, etc.).

  • Healthcare Facilities: Institutions that provide healthcare services, such as hospitals, clinics, and health centers.
